What's your sign?

Our sleepy town doesn’t really have a homeless problem. None that I know of, anyway. Those who through choice or circumstance lose their station in life usually have family or friends who are more than willing to offer them a place to stay.

But things are different in the nearby cities, where there are more than a few poor souls who have slipped through the cracks and settled on society’s murky bottom. Forgotten or, even worse, ignored.

You see these people most often perched along the busiest intersections. Their appearance is consistent with their desperation and need—dirty clothes, often a dirtier hat, unshaven and gaunt. And there is always a sign.

VETERAN PLEASE HELP GOD BLESS.

HIV+ NEED MEDICINE.

HUNGRY FAR FROM HOME PLEASE GIVE.

I have friends who refuse to give to such people based upon the skepticism that whatever proceeds these people receive will be used for less than savory activities. They don’t want to be a part of enabling a drug addict to buy more meth or a drunk more liquor. I also have friends who give regardless, believing that their act of mercy, of helping the helpless, is an act God happens to smile brightly upon.

I happen to adopt the latter position and give as often as I can, though I’ll admit there have been more than a few times when I have questioned the validity of their statements.

Still, these signs have always fascinated me. They represent the current state of one person’s life pared down to reveal only the essentials. One story able to fit on a single piece of discarded cardboard. And they are each by necessity crafted to initiate an immediate response. They are not designed to persuade through the intellect or please the eyes. They are meant to be shot as an arrow into the heart.

After running a few errands in the city yesterday, I was on my way home when I saw a man sitting by the guardrail on the opposite side of the road. His flannel shirt hung loosely from his body, sleeves rolled up against the hot sun. The blue work pants that completed the outfit were the sort that provided the maximum amount of wear for the least amount of money. A pair of untied brown tennis shoes shuffled the gravel.

But it was his sign that caught my attention. Three words, and no more. Three words that spoke very much with very little and offered honesty rather than a plea.

DESPERATE AND TIRED, it read.

The rush hour traffic was such that I couldn’t turn around and offer him what I could. I didn’t have much choice but to keep going. As I drove I watched him through the side mirror, hoping someone would stop.

No one did. Some, I suppose, didn’t notice him. Others probably did but then decided not to. One car full of teenagers blew their horn and offered a chorus of middle fingers.

The man never moved. Never shifted his weight or lifted his head. This was not so much an insult as it was the status quo.

Yet I realized that we all were in many ways like that poor man. Like all of the lost souls who roam our streets and barely manage to survive. We’ve all slipped through our own share of cracks at some point.

VETERAN PLEASE HELP GOD BLESS? We’ve all sacrificed, given all we’ve had, only to not get the same returned back to us.

HIV+ NEED MEDICINE? We are all hurting in our own way. Some are afflicted with physical ailments. Others have their ailments on the inside. Many of us have both.

HUNGRY FAR FROM HOME PLEASE GIVE? Within each of us is a hunger, whether to love or be loved, that can only be filled by a God who at this moment is readying a faraway place for us to call home.

And let’s not forget the last. DESPERATE AND TIRED. How many times have we all felt that way?

The difference between us and them have much less to do with our level of comfort and much more to do with our level of honesty.

Because we all carry a sign that tells the story of our lives, pared down to reveal only the essentials. They choose to show the world in a bid for help. We don’t. And for that, they are better.

Wow. What a picture, all of us carrying our own sign. This gives a whole other meaning to wearing your heart on your sleeve...it would reveal even more of those things we'd rather keep buried deep inside.

Thanks for another great post, Billy.

So much to way to this one Billy!

But I'll leave it with AMEN!

Praise God for your heart willing to speak up and remind others to see His children. To look and NOT ignore - because you never know one may be His angel wanting to see if you notice Him there?

Blessings Billy! You are a gem!

Another amazing post......I, like you.....give with my heart, but also have that slight twang in the distance that brings some doubt when I hand it over. I just keep telling myself that this person is the lost, broken, helpless that Jesus spoke about in Matthew 25:40

I am sure I have a slew of signs that I can pull out to display, SELFISH, DESPERATE, CONFUSED but I am choosing lately to know that I can speak God's words over my life (words of LIFE)...so I am gonna grab the ones that says THANKFUL and BLESSED

great post! I love it!

I love this post.

I wrote a post called "Giving" a long time ago, about a time I gave to a man on the side of the road and the conversation that ensued with Miles. Oh, how I hope I show love and mercy to anyone and everyone in front of my children, no matter what the suspicion or assumption.

Without supportive and loving people in my life, I could have held one of those signs in my past. So I give...because I know we all get lost sometimes and it's not always the person's "fault."

We do all hold signs, it's just that most of us are covering them to save face.

I'll stop writing a book in your comments now. :)

My friend Koffijah once said how we look at someone has much to do with how we love them. Some of us pretend better than others, but we're all broken.

Love this post, Billy.

Billy,

I just finished reading a book about this very subject on homeless called What Difference Do It Make?

It is so heartwarming and gives insight on to the very souls we see each day.

For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me. The King will answer and say to them, "Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me." ~ quoted from Matthew 20.

By helping those that need food and drink and clothing, we are to give what we have because we are doing just what God has commanded.

It is not for us to judge how they got there or what the money or help will be used for. Let the offering be a blessing on them and pray for them while you are giving them what money you can. You never know how God will use it for His good.

Let us never forget that and remember we just never know whose eyes God will use to look at us!

Love and Hugs ~ Kat

There are many times I have handed over money because I felt what I believe is a prompt from God. And I don't believe I have the right to question what they will do with the money, epecially if God is asking me to give. They aren't all drug addicts or alcoholics...

And maybe, they are holding the sign that says 'desperate' and that one act of giving is what they so desperately need...

Great post my friend!

Great post, Billy! We should all carry signs when we are in need. How else will our brothers and sisters in Christ know what to pray for? The power of prayer over specific requests is so powerful. I pray for the verterans in need, the people suffering w/ HIV, the people who are hungry and those who are desperate and tired.

My first encounter with homelessness was when I moved to New Orleans. I was 17 and gave a ten spot to this man sitting on a piece of cardboard. he appared to be disfigured. I have a gift of remembering things, including faces and names, etc.. So imagine my surprise when a saw this man several weeks later walking around, laughing with his buddy. I didn't hold back, but began tearing into this man verbally on the streets. It was a sight. I've since grown up, mostly anyways. Since then I've seen homelessness in several cities here in the US, in Spain, in Ireland and Australia. I don't miss any of the money I continue to give away.God will sort of the thieves when it's time. If you really want to help, volunteer at a shelter, when you grocery shop, buy $10.00 of boxed and canned foods and bring it to a shelter. We can all do something about this :o)

This is a POWERFUL 'ministry' message! It's ministering to the masses I'm sure.

I am one who gives regardless. I feel that if they are trying to pull my leg then it's between them and GOD. I just give...

My heart is deeply moved by your message. We all have a "sign". It may not be the same but we all have one.

Praying for all who are in need.

Love this. The beautiful thing is that God have us a sign, His Son. I pray I carry that one well and let Him use me to make a difference in a hurting world. B
