Catching happiness

This is by far my favorite time of year, and for more reasons than one. It's firing up the grill and smelling the grass and taking in a baseball game. Sitting on the porch and getting into the woods and taking down the fishing pole. Sweat and dirt and mud.

Fun? Yes.

But my favorite part of those precious days between June and September is the fireflies. Amazing creatures. As a child I'd spend hours each night chasing them around my backyard, jumping and grabbing and, sometimes, catching. And to be honest, I still do sometimes. Don't you judge me.

I've passed along my love of firefly catching to my own children, who will more than likely be spotted in their own backyard on these warm summer nights trying to catch some of their own.

That's exactly what they did this past Fourth of July, forsaking the fireworks exploding over their heads for the tiny sparkles of light around them. At first, I couldn't understand why they did that. But after watching them, I found

The story of what I discovered can be found over at Katdish's blog. Stop by and tell her hello for me. And when the sun goes down tonight, go catch you some happiness...

Chasing fireflies with my sisters, brother and cousins is one of my fondest memories as a child. Also one of the things I miss about living in Virginia. The heat must keep them away down here.

Catching fireflies is one of our children's favorite things to do too!

We share our love it with whomever comes over and by the end of their time here, they leave with the joy of His creation a bit deeper in their soul!

We have fireworks in our backyard for almost 6 weeks from all the fireflies! And without the NOISE! Which our children don't like - so it is awesome!

Blessings and love,
Jill

We didn't have fireflies in Colorado. On the warm & muggy evenings when they show up in Michigan, they absolutely fascinate us. But I can't imagine anything distracting me from the fireworks which are more rare than fireflies.

Fireworks last only a moment and creation is forever. The freedom I celebrate is Christ in me--and fireflies sort of remind a guy about that.

I wish catching happiness were as easy as catching fireflies.

But in some way, they are the same.

I need a little happiness in a jar right now.

Thanks

The fact that you still go chasing the fireflies I think is one of if not most endearing things about you! It says a lot.

I always loved catching fireflies as a kid, but I was a bit cruel, I must admit. I used to pinch off their lights and rub it all over my shirt so that it would glow. Can you imagine? I feel HORRIBLE!

Whoa...Are you and Katdish switching things up to mess with us? Or is white more writer professional? (Katdish..professional..snort!)

Seriously though, I loved catching fireflies at Grandma's house in Ohio. Good times.

Hey, love the new look. Easier to read than against that black background. Heading over to Kat's spot now.

Whoo-Hoo!

Billy,

It is one of the things I miss living here in California. We don't have fireflies. I sure do miss them though.

Perhaps one day, we will take that cross country road trip and stop along the way at Twilight and see them.

Judge you for chasing fireflies? Adults who don't chase fireflies when given the chance are missing out on the wonder of the amazing. I will never grow tired of holding that little bug in my hand and wondering how on earth that light happens...

Grown-ups may have science, but kids have wonder. I know what group I'd rather be in. ;)

We called them lightening bugs...

I miss the fireflies. When we moved to Florida, I have yet to see any of them. But I have endless memories of catching them as a child. We couldn't wait for it to get dark and run outside to do it!

I've never caught any fireflies -- I'm not even sure we have them in this part of FL. But it's something I will be on the lookout for in the future!

Billy, I loved this post and the reminders of chasing fireflies. I can see all the way back to my early elementary years. I can see the old house that we lived in, the kids in the neighborhood gathered around catching our lightening bugs , putting them in jars, with vented lids on there. Fast forward a few years... well, lots of years... my children are capitvated by the lights, catching them one at a time, making a special home in the vented jars... where they lived for a short period of time...before we let them go.

It never grows old watching the lightening bugs, does it. Year after year generations are delighted by their special ability to light up their world.

What a picture for our hearts...

Thanks, Billy!

We call 'em lightning bugs around here, Billy. We used to put them in a jar (with air holes, of course) and take them to our rooms. We would watch them until we went to sleep, then our dad would take them outside and let them go.

Great memories!
